PAULA RADCLIFFE said yesterday that the pressure on her to release blood test data borders on abuse.
The marathon world record holder denied cheating after appearing to be implicated in the ongoing athletics doping scandal by Tory MP Jesse Norman.
Parliament’s culture, media and sport select committee were investigating allegations that hundreds of athletes had recorded suspicious blood test results which were then ignored by governing body IAAF when chairman Norman appeared to implicate her.
Norman insisted he did not identify Radcliffe by using the words “potentially the winners or medallists at the London Marathon, potentially British athletes, are under suspicion for very high levels” and blamed the media for the mess.
Radcliffe’s test scores fluctuated because of innocent reasons, she said, pointing out that the World Anti-Doping Agency had cleared her.
She took a swipe at the committee, who “don’t fully understand” the situation, and stuck up for “the good work” of the IAAF.
Doping expert Michael Ashenden told the committee on Tuesday that the IAAF had effectively stuck its fingers in its ears for years and was now “simply overwhelmed.”
