Tidal energy plant given go-ahead

A £300 MILLION tidal energy plant is to be built at Fleetwood in Lancashire after 93 per cent of local people backed the project in a poll published yesterday.

The work involves building a 600-metre boom across the River Wyre to use the power of incoming and outgoing tides to produce electricity.

The plant, the first of its kind in Britain, will convert energy four times a day with each tidal movement and will generate enough power to supply 50,000 homes.

Fleetwood-based company Natural Energy Wyre said the project would create jobs both in constructing the tidal hydro energy plant (THEP) and in running it.

The company also claims the technology has an expected lifespan of more than 125 years.

The Wyre, which flows into Morecambe Bay at Fleetwood, experiences tides of more than 10 metres.

Bob Long of Natural Energy Wyre said: “We have involved the local public in this project from the start and constructing a THEP at the chosen location would be a major step for this small town.”

The technology is similar to projects in other parts of the world including Brazil, France, South Korea and Russia.
