Award for job-cutting press bosses angers NUJ

JOURNALISTS facing waves of sackings and job cuts were outraged yesterday to discover that their vicious employer has been given a government-backed “Investors in People” award.

Newsquest, one of Britain’s five biggest regional newspaper publishers, is owned by US conglomerate Gannett.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) says Newsquest is conducting a systematic attack on staff by sacking reporters, photographers and subeditors, closing offices, transferring staff to centres 100 miles from their homes and freezing wages — all in the name of boosting profits.

Yet Newsquest has been awarded a bronze “Investors in People” award for a new subediting centre it has set up in Wales.

Investors in People is funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Newsquest NUJ group co-ordinator Chris Morley said the accolade, which the union is challenging, “was greeted with uniform disbelief by our members.”

He said that, in July, the NUJ had branded Newsquest’s wave of redundancies a “summer of sackings,” while chapels in London called 12 days of strikes over job cuts.
