Isis accused of slaughtering civilians in Deir el-Zour

ISLAMIC STATE (Isis) militants were accused yesterday of slaughtering 300 people in an “appalling massacre” in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour.

The state-run SANA news agency said that most of those killed in Saturday’s attacks, which saw Isis make significant advances, were elderly people, women and children.

The opposition asserted that victims were mainly soldiers and pro-government militiamen and their families.

The pro-opposition Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Saturday night that at least 135 people had been killed — some 80 soldiers and militia fighters and the rest civilians.

Isis controls most of Deir el-Zour province and much of the provincial capital with the same name, while forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad hold several northern areas of the city and the adjacent military airport.

Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen TV accused Isis of killing dozens of people and taking over 400 civilians hostage.
