AL-SHABAB extremist gunmen from Somalia killed 12 people in an attack on non-Muslims in Kenya’s Mandera county yesterday morning.
The Somali rebels claimed responsibility for the early morning attack on the Bishaaro Guest House, saying its fighters had targeted Christians, according to the group’s Andalus radio station.
The gunmen used grenades and homemade explosives to break into the guest house before storming in with guns, said Mandera regional commander Mohamed Saleh.
Later yesterday, an al-Shabab suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into an African Union military base in central Somalia.
Police said the bomber had detonated his bomb at the gates of the base in Beledweyne town, but no-one else was injured.
The attacks followed al-Shabab’s assassination of a senior intelligence officer late on Monday.
Colonel Abdiasis Araye was killed as he walked to a mosque in Mogadishu, police said.
