Glasgow 2014: Commonwealth Games chiefs drop Red Road flat demolition opening ceremony display at Celtic Park

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games boss David Grevemberg drops insulting live demolition of iconic Red Road flats during opening ceremony due to 'safety and security' concerns

Controversial plans to demolish iconic tower blocks in Glasgow as part of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony were scrapped yesterday.

Glasgow 2014 chiefs wanted to blow up five of the six remaining 1960s Red Road flats at the July 23 event, with footage beamed direct to the Celtic Park ceremony and to an estimated global TV audience of more than one billion people.

But the plan attracted fierce opposition including from the asylum-seekers who occupy the sixth block.

Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg said the decision was taken after opinions were expressed which “change the safety and security context.”

Former Scottish Socialist MSP Carolyn Leckie, who launched a 17,000-strong petition against the plans said she was “extremely pleased” about the decision.
