ACTIVISTS in Britain launched a Close Guantanamo campaign yesterday, calling on Barack Obama to shut down the prison within the year he has left in office.

The campaign, including former detainee Shaker Aamer — who was released in October after 14 years in the camp without charge or trial — We Stand With Shaker campaign co-founder Andy Worthington and US lawyer Tom Wilner, is demanding that the US president closes the prison camp in Cuba before a current presidential candidate succeeds him in January 2017.

Mr Aamer, ex-Pink Floyd member Roger Waters and musician Brian Eno will be reminding Obama — who promised to close it when he first took office seven years ago — that the clock is ticking by holding a series of signs throughout the year that show how little time he has left.

People are encouraged to send in similar photos of themselves that would be displayed on the campaign’s website and social media.

The Star reported on Thursday that British charity Reprieve is asking the public to lobby the US government into releasing disturbing top-secret footage of hunger-striking Guantanamo detainees being force-fed to expose their horrific treatment.

Mr Worthington said: "Indefinite detention without charge or trial ought to be anathema to all US citizens who claim to respect the rule of law and yet it continues at Guantanamo."

Obama will also be demanded to free all the prisoners approved for release, speed up processes for those still awaiting reviews, hold trials for seven men awaiting them and appoint a senior White House official to oversee the closure of Guantanamo.
