Uruguay: Ex-Guantanamo Bay inmates demand help to adjust

FOUR former Guantanamo Bay prisoners protested in Uruguay for a second day on Saturday.

They were demanding help from the governments of Uruguay and the US in adapting to life in their new home country.

The men began their protest in front of the US embassy in Montevideo on Friday and slept there through the night, insisting that they would carry on the protest.

“We are not leaving until we speak with the ambassador,” said former detainee Adel bin Muhammad el-Ouerghi.

Uruguay took in the four and two other men in December after US authorities freed them from Guantanamo after 12 years at the prison camp.

However, they were never charged with anything and US officials were finally forced to admit they had nothing against the four and let them go.

The four Syrians, one Tunisian and one Palestinian have repeatedly said that the US should help them financially.
