Waltham Forest gears up to stop racist EDL

ANTI-FASCISTS were gearing up yesterday to fightback against a planned English Defence League march through east London on Saturday.

We Are Waltham Forest, launched as a counter campaign against racists and fascists marching in the London borough, is teaming up with Unite Against Fascism (UAF) to kick out the far right rabble.

UAF’s Sophie Bolt told the Star: “We have to stand up to fascism in order to defeat it. And we have to stand united.
“That’s why we are going to be peacefully protesting to defend Waltham Forest communities.”

She explained how the EDL originally planned to march in Woolwich in memory of murdered Lee Rigby until his mother condemned the move.

Local religious, community and arts organisations across the borough have signed a joint statement in support of the counter demonstration.

Speakers joining the rally include Green MEP Jean Lambert, comedian and Waltham Forest resident Ava Vidal, Stop the War convenor Lindsey German, Stand up to Ukip chair Jo Cardwell and Sertuc LGBT secretary David Sharkey.
