Galloway tells Lexit meeting: ‘EU is no civilising mission’

FORMER Labour and Respect MP George Galloway took issue on Tuesday evening with claims that the European Union is the guarantor of workplace and other democratic rights.

He listed legislation from decriminalisation of homosexuality to abortion rights, abolition of theatre censorship and the introduction of equal pay legislation as examples of legal progress before Britain joined the EU.

Mr Galloway told a Cardiff Left Leave (Lexit) meeting: “Don’t tell me the EU is a civilising mission.

“This is not only an overestimation of the EU — worse, it’s an underestimation of ourselves.”

He ridiculed the assertion by some pro-Remain campaigners that a vote to leave the EU on June 23 would be followed by a bonfire of workers’ rights.

“We’ll get the rights we fight for and the rights we vote for,” he declared, forecasting that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell would go to the people with a left-wing manifesto and would win the next election.
