Greece: Turkey fury over failed extradition bid for 8

TURKISH Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu threatened Athens and the EU yesterday after a court refused to extradite eight military officers allegedly involved in July’s failed coup.

The Greek Supreme Court denied the extradition request, saying the eight would not get a fair trial in Turkey.

“We will take all necessary steps, including the cancellation of the bilateral readmission agreement,” Mr Cavusoglu said, referring to the controversial deal to take back refugees landing in Greece who are denied asylum.

“We cannot look positively upon countries that protect terrorists, traitors and coup plotters.”

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras protested that Athens had strongly condemned the coup from the outset and that the government had no authority over the judiciary.
