AN E-CIGARETTE product was withdrawn from sale yesterday following a BBC investigation which revealed it contained a potentially lethal toxic chemical linked with lung disease.
The product is made by one of the country’s biggest e-cigarette firms, VIP.
Four types of e-cigarette liquid have been tested in a laboratory as part of Inside Out’s North East show, broadcast tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
A butterscotch-flavoured one was found to contain a chemical called diacetyl which is safe to eat but can be harmful if inhaled. It is linked to serious lung disease.
VIP’s head of retail distribution Lynne White said she was “very disappointed” the refill was still available as the firm’s own testing discovered the chemical around a week before.
She told the show: “This is our first issue in five years. We sell millions of bottles a year. We are very sorry it has happened, we are investigating how it has happened.”
