Spine-tingling coda a reminder of what we’re going to miss

THERE’S a sad loss to report this month with the news that the mighty vocal trio Coope, Boyes and Simpson are calling it a day after 23 years.

Their final album Coda (No Masters) is a tour de force that shows us exactly what a hole will be left in English folk when their spine-tingling a capella harmonies fall silent.

It packs a powerful political punch, kicking off with Jim Boyes’s The Avenging Angel, an instant classic yoking the melody of the gospel song Palms of Victory to a stinging denunciation of Western bloodshed in the Middle East.
