ANTIFASCIST campaigners in Scotland declared that Nigel Farage was “not welcome in Glasgow or anywhere else” as the Ukip leader attempted to hold a controversial public meeting yesterday.
Hope not Hate Scotland secretary Rab O’Donnell told the Morning Star the location of the Farage meeting had been “shrouded in secrecy” as the Ukip leader dodged hostile campaigners.
Earlier, in a radio interview, the Ukip leader made a bizarre call for the Queen to step into the independence referendum debate.
Mr Farage told LBC: “If the very future of the United Kingdom itself is threatened she should say something.”
But Mr O’Donnell said the extreme right-winger’s trip to Glasgow was “nothing to do with the referendum and everything to do with Ukip’s nasty political ideology.”
He said: “Ukip is trying to capitalise on its result in the European election in June when it got more than 12,000 votes in Glasgow and gained a Scottish MEP.
“They aim to appeal to working class voters with a so-called ‘blue collar strategy’ — but we’re here to tell them they’re not welcome in Glasgow — or anywhere else for that matter.”
Better Together campaigners had previously called for the Ukip leader to stay out of the referendum campaign.
Scottish Tory MSP Murdo Fraser said: “I think it would be best if Nigel Farage stayed as far away from Scotland as possible.”
Up to 10,000 marchers are expected to join a controversial Orange Order parade in in Edinburgh today in defence of the United Kingdom.
