Lisa Kelly - Money Go Round
edited by Jody Porter

Money Go Round
by Lisa Kelly

As she takes and empties my purse
and sighs at the coins – three 2ps, one 10,
then slams out of the house with a curse
and two surly-faced friends

who now won’t be treated to chips,
I am my mother who crumbled
when my brother or I gave her lip,
threatened to leave home, or grumbled

at the emptiness of her purse,
and I sigh at the coins, three 2ps, one 10,
think how much easier it would be to curse,
ignore family, sod off with friends.

Lisa Kelly’s pamphlet, Bloodhound, was published by Hearing Eye in 2012. She is a regular host of poetry evenings at the Torriano Meeting House, London.
