Farringdon’s weekend racing: Captain Ramius in the hunt at Ayr Gold Cup

Classy seven-year-old can score for the second year running in west Scotland

It's Ayr Gold Cup (3.50) day at the west of Scotland track tomorrow and despite the event being as wide open as ever I strongly fancy Captain Ramius to double up on last year's victory.

Although 4lb up here, this is the perfect make-up for this mud lover and the more rain the better for this classy seven-year-old.

There are loads of dangers including top weight Jack Dexter, who borders on Group One class, Highland Colori, Ripon winner Baccarat, Irish outsider Joe Eile and the 2012 Silver Cup winner Mass Rally.

The Silver Cup at 2.40 can go to Yeeow after a good warm-up at Doncaster last week.

The four-year-old has any number of dangers in the 27-runner field including Colonel Mak, Pearl Ice and bottom weight Crew Cut.

Les Gar Gan (1.30) went off a quite strong favourite for a seven-furlong nursery at Doncaster last week but was never really going the pace and only in the final furlong did she get going to close on the leaders without being put under maximum pressure.

The step up to a mile here should serve her well and any losses should be repaid with an each-way price the likely set-up.

Braidley was successful at the same meeting over seven furlongs and will definitely get the mile trip, but he has been savaged with a 10lbs penalty.

At Newbury, the biggest betting race on the card is the 10-furlong handicap at 2.55 and finally sees Voodoo Prince return to his best trip.

However, the reason I am opposing him is that he is a better horse when fresh, having travelled well through the race at Kempton on his comeback, and that could leave him vulnerable to Haafaguinea.

The Clive Cox trained three-year-old has been lightly raced this season, kicking off with a rallying success on his seasonal debut and then being far from disgraced in two very competitive events at Goodwood Mile and Ripon.

I think there is more to come from this youngster and he gets the nod over Ed Dunlop's charge and stablemate Black Spirit.

Elswhere, I think that Teak has major claims in the Cesarewitch Trial at Newmarket at 3.40, while over at Catterick have a second look at both Dawn Calling in the maiden at 3.55 and Wotalad in the 5.40.

In the evening, Wolverhampton holds court on its own and the best bet on the eight-race card could come in the form of The Bells O Peover.

He has run some horrendous races this year, but is chucked in here if showing a semblance of his old form.
