RAPIST and former Israeli president Moshe Katsav was released early from prison yesterday after five years inside.
Mr Katsav was jailed in 2011 for seven years for raping a female employee twice in 1998, sexually harassing two other women between 2000 and 2007 and obstruction of justice.
There were other allegations that Mr Katsav raped and sexually harassed up to 10 women.
Mr Katsav’s release follows the appointment of Colonel Eyal Karim as army chief rabbi.
Before he could take up the post, he had to issue a sworn statement apologising for past religious rulings, which have been condemned as misogynistic.
In 2002 Col Karim told a religious website that during war Jewish men could rape non-Jewish women.
To keep up morale, he said, soldiers could “satisfy the evil inclination by lying with attractive Gentile women against their will, out of consideration for the difficulties faced by the soldiers and for overall success.”
