Film: Review - Child’s Pose (15)

JEFF SAWTELL recommends a Romanian satire on post-socialist corruption

Child’s Pose (15)
Directed by Cain Peter Netzer
Four stars

Luminita Gheorghiu is truly terrifying playing powerful matriarch Cornelia Keneres, who will do anything to save her worthless son from being punished for killing a child in an accident.

Dressed to impress with nouveaux-riche extravagance, she attempts to bribe compliant authorities and witnesses to alter evidence, including trying to pay off the child’s family.

They’re working class and thus potential prey. Keneres even has the gall to call on them in an attempt to make them recognise she’s human and they respond with requisite dignity.

In this satire on Romanian post-socialist corruption, it’s almost impossible to identify with Keneres, even as she goes through the emotions — her cracked, painted face becomes a parody since her obsequious is devious.

Think Thatcher, and her selfish spawn suddenly confronted with those she scorned. Nary, a tear for her — or Keneres for that matter.
