New Zealand: 240 more whales stranded

THE disastrous pilot whale beaching in New Zealand became even worse yesterday, writes Peter Frost.

Despite the efforts of scores of weary volunteers, who managed to refloat over 100 of the original 420 beached animals on a remote New Zealand beach, a second pod of 240 came ashore on Sunday, bringing the total to 660.

Volunteers were back in the water at first light yesterday, but they encounter a new difficulty with the arrival of both stingrays and sharks that had been attracted by blood and numerous dead and dying whales.

Some conditions, however, helped and in crystal-clear water dozens of volunteers formed a human chain to keep at least some of the whales afloat and off the sands.

Two hundred whales have been refloated and returned to deeper waters, but experts warned that further whales may beach themselves this week.
