LEFT-GREEN MEPs pressed the European Union’s foreign policy chief on Tuesday night to pursue “equal and fair” relations with Cuba.
EU high representative for foreign affairs and security Federica Mogherini attended a debate on the EU-Cuba political and co-operation agreement.
European United Left/Nordic Green Left MEP Sofia Sakorafa said relations with Cuba should be “guided by the principles of reciprocity and co-operation without conditions or discrimination.”
Despite the illegal blockade, “Cuba provides free universal public education with impressive scientific results and free universal healthcare,” Ms Sakorafa said.
She called the Caribbean nation “a pioneer in areas of prevention and ongoing research in the pharmaceutical and medical field.
“I hope the first positive effects will soon become visible to the Cuban people who, even under the most difficult conditions, did not surrender their dignity or their right to decide on their lives and their country,” Ms Sakarofa added.
