Sandhu makes history in Norway

Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the first Indian player to play in the top tier for a European club on Wednesday night.

Sandhu started for Norwegian club Stabaek in the cup and beat Runar 6-0, keeping a clean sheet in the process.

“I’m really proud and happy that it happened. I was waiting for the chance — the team won, that’s the main thing and (I got) a clean sheet and I thank the team for that,” he told the club’s official website afterwards.

“The team showed character and didn’t lose concentration and did what it required in these kind of matches.

“I’m the only Indian player to play for a top division club in Europe so... I’m lucky.”

Sandhu joined the club last season but is backup to Ivory Coast goalkeeper Sayouba Mande.
