Man Utd 0-1 Southampton, by Simon Williams at Old Trafford
Southampton secured their first victory at Old Trafford since January 1988 yesterday thanks to a second-half goal from substitute Dusan Tadic.
The Serbian found the back of the net on 69 minutes to give the Saints their first victory over a team currently in the top five of the league.
And their 10th clean sheet in 20 games is a joint league high along with Chelsea.
Louis van Gaal’s side failed to have a single shot on target as their 10-match unbeaten run in the league was ended.
Manchester United went into the game unbeaten in their last eight Premier League matches against Southampton, winning six and drawing two.
But the Saints were looking to extend their five-game unbeaten streak, having previously gone six matches without a win following an impressive start to the season.
And it was the visitors who had a good chance to take the lead inside the first minute when Nathaniel Clyne burst into the box after a neat one-two with Graziano Pelle, but dragged his shot wide of goal.
Angel Di Maria had the home side’s best chances to open the scoring, the Argentinian failing to find the back of the net on two occasions following his return to the starting line-up for the first time in the league after returning from injury.
Again it was Southampton who started brightly after the interval when Steven Davies forced an early corner for the visitors after his shot was blocked, before Pelle also saw an effort thwarted by the United defence.
Ronald Koeman’s side continued to push their hosts, Eljero Elia producing a sublime piece of skill to get away from Phil Jones before finding Victor Wanyama, whose effort sailed harmlessly over the bar.
And the pressure paid off midway through the second half when Southampton took the lead through substitute Tadic.
The midfielder found Pelle inside the area only for his shot to cannon off the the post but fortunately into the path of Tadic, who slotted the ball home.
United had a chance to level the score shortly after with Juan Mata spurning two chances in as many minutes.
And Van Gaal’s side continued to exert pressure in the dying embers of the game only for their poor delivery into the area to let them down.
The victory means Southampton leapfrog United into third place in the Premier League table.
