Tomorrow’s clash between Accrington Stanley and Grimsby is a “massive” game for the promotion-focused Reds, manager John Coleman said yesterday.
“We won’t be resting any players,” Coleman said. “We have spoken about getting a winning environment together within our side. We have to make sure that we look after ourselves and that everybody else gets looked after, too.
“Promotion has been our goal since we walked onto the ground for our very first game in pre-season, and it hasn’t changed now. Promotion is our aim.”
Stanley cruised past Carlisle United on Saturday to move up to second place in the league on goal difference, while maintaining their impressive record of scoring at least twice in every league game.
A neatly slotted goal from forward Billy Kee, inside 16 minutes, was followed by a delightfully curled free-kick by Sean McConville, by the 42-minute mark, to gave the home side the edge in the first half.
McConville wrapped up three points for Stanley with a fine dribble and assured finish from inside the box 10 minutes after the break.
Despite recent impressive results, Coleman has called for calm, knowing that promotion to League One is some way off yet for a side that finished 13th last term.
“We’re not going to get carried away, that’s for sure. It’s like when you see a good Liverpool team win 4-0 against Arsenal two weeks ago, and then today lose 5-0. There’s still areas to improve, even the lads spoke about that themselves.
“We try and lead the lads down the right path, but they think for themselves. They know that they can pass better — they can certainly finish better.”
