Afghanistan — an imperialist adventure that must never be allowed to happen again
The workers' movement is right to demand justice for those now forced to flee a country abandoned to the Taliban, but we must never allow this to pave the way to more military interference, writes JOHN MILLINGTON
US soldiers in Afghanistan

THE recent re-taking of Afghanistan by the deeply reactionary Taliban has sparked a wave of condemnation, solidarity with journalists and calls for greater support for refugees trying to flee the country.

The international solidarity shown to journalists, particularly women who have lost their jobs and faced threats from Taliban fighters, has made me even more proud to be a member of the National Union of Journalists.

Our international body,  the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), has played a superb role in pressuring governments to take action to protect Afghan journalists and used its safety fund to assist those in dire financial straits.

John Millington is a former Morning Star journalist and serves on the NUJ NEC. He writes this in a personal capacity.
