ARSENAL boss Mikel Arteta believes the club are on the right track to end the season in memorable fashion.

The Gunners dispatched Leicester City 2-0 on Sunday afternoon with Arteta hunting for the riches of the promised land that is the Champions League qualification.

Goals from Thomas Partey and a second half spot kick from captain Alex Lacazette saw Arteta’s side leapfrog Manchester United into fourth place, one point ahead and three games in hand as Arsenal sealed their fifth win on the bounce.

Arsenal qualified for 19 successive Champions League campaigns from the 1998-99 season onwards - with Arteta aware that the club has an ‘obligation’ to qualify for Europe’s most lucrative club tournament.

Speaking after the match, Arteta said: "We have to be there, we should be there. Our history obliges us to be there but we are not there yet and there are still a lot of games to play.

"We have an excellent group of people at the club who believe in what we do. Then you have to put performance into results. The last few months, we have been more consistent."

Partey nodded in at the near after only 11 minutes following the lively Gabriel Martinelli's corner. In an excellent performance the former Atletico Madrid midfielder also hit the woodwork shortly afterwards as Arsenal dominated.

However, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was alert to danger to twice deny the Foxes’ Harvey Barnes, including a superb reaction save which recalled memories of his outstanding effort to deny James Maddison in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

Arsenal made the game safe when Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu was penalised for handball following a long VAR review that saw Lacazette fire home emphatically from the spot on the hour mark to seal victory.

Arteta’s side now host title-chasing Liverpool in north London on Wednesday in a mouth-watering clash.
