Amazon workers in Coventry set to continue historic strike action

WORKERS at an Amazon warehouse in Coventry are set to continue their historic strike action tomorrow after accusing the online retail giant of engaging in desperate tactics.

About 700 staff at the West Midlands fulfilment centre will also down tools on Friday as they step up their fight against the mega-rich US-owned company’s “derisory” 50p pay rise, their union, GMB said.

Some 16 days of walkouts have now been called in the five-month dispute – the first to see strikes hit Amazon sites in Britain.

GMB senior organiser Amanda Gearing hailed the “sky-high” mood of her members, who have received support from colleagues around the world.

“Meanwhile, Amazon top brass are reaching for desperate Jekyll and Hyde tactics,” she said.

“One day they’re promising vouchers and competitions to win over staff, the next they’re setting up barriers to keep staff union representatives away.”

The workers are awaiting the outcome of their groundbreaking union recognition bid to the government’s central arbitration committee.

Their colleagues in Rugeley and Mansfield are also balloting to join the industrial action.

Amazon said it “works hard to provide great benefits, a positive work environment and excellent career opportunities.”
