Annual number of rapes and sexual assaults hit record high
Campaigners call for complete overhaul of the criminal justice system to fix ‘crisis of public trust’

CAMPAIGNERS called for a complete overhaul of the criminal justice system today to fix a “crisis of public trust” after the annual number of rapes and sexual assaults hit a record high.

Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) figures published today show that there were a record 63,136 rapes and 170,973 sexual assaults recorded by police in the year to September 2021.

But the CPS said that a very low proportion are referred to prosecutors, with 2,747 cases sent by police to the CPS in 2020-21 out of a total of 55,709 recorded rapes.
