ACTIVISTS from gentrification-hit Brixton crashed an online party on Saturday hosted by a US property mogul responsible for the evictions of traders in the area.
Taylor McWilliams heads Hondo Enterprises, a property investment company that owns the lease to two markets in the south London district.
The landlord has issued grocery store Nour Cash & Carry an eviction notice for July which locals have been bitterly fighting against.
The US socialite is also part of DJ collective Housekeeping which on Saturday hosted a set on Zoom, the online conference platform.
But the DJ bash was disrupted by local activists who held up signs reading: “Evicting food suppliers during a global pandemic?” and “Cruel Brixton gentrifiers.”
Explaining the action, one activist said: “We crashed his party in protest against the evictions and to show [Mr McWilliams] that the local community are watching him, even if he wants to appear in the guise of a fun-loving DJ.”
The protest resulted in moderators briefly stopping the live stream on Facebook.
Brixton has faced rapid gentrification over the past 10 years, with many market traders forced out to make way for pricey cafes and restaurants.
