Anti-war campaigners set to protest outside US embassy against return of nuclear bombs to British bases

ACTIVISTS from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) are set to converge on the US embassy in London tonight to protest at the return of US nuclear bombs to Britain.

The demo in Nine Elms — organised by peace activists from across the capital and England’s home counties — is due to take place tonight at 5:30pm.

It comes after the Federation of American Scientists revealed earlier this year that the latest generation of the doomsday weapons, B61-12s, have been cleared for transport to bases across Europe, including Britain.

They will be sitting “on London’s doorstep” in US-controlled Lakenheath air base in Suffolk, just 70 miles north-east of the city which is home to millions, CND warned.

It added that silos to house the guided weapons of mass destruction are already in situ, while the latest fighter-bomber aircraft, the F-35As, are already at the site, where training began last year.

Ahead of the protest, London Region CND co-chairwoman Carol Turner said: “Londoners don’t want your weapons of mass and indiscriminate destruction on our doorstep.

“At a time of heightened international tensions, US nuclear weapons put Britain on the front line of any nuclear exchange.”

And Stop the War Coalition chairwoman Shelly Asquith said: “Our own government has said it is happy to house what could cause unimaginable death and destruction.

“We are coming together to say no to US nukes in Britain.”

Tonight’s demo, set to be addressed by speakers including ex-Labour MP Emma Dent-Coad and Jess Barnard from the party’s national executive committee, follows two national CND demonstrations last year, with a third planned for May 20.

The CND has also condemned the UK’s decision to send depleted uranium shells for use in Challenger 2 tanks gifted to Ukraine.
