Charges dropped against anti-monarchy protester who shouted ‘who elected him?’ at King Charles proclamation

AN anti-monarchist arrested for protesting at a proclamation ceremony for King Charles III has had all charges against him dropped.

Symon Hill of campaign group the Peace Pledge Union shouted: “Who elected him?” during the event at Carfax Tower in Oxford on September 11 last year.

He was handcuffed and bundled into a police van for behaviour causing “harassment, alarm or distress” under the Public Order Act.

The arrest took place as cities across Britain held ceremonies to officially recognise Charles as the new monarch.

Mr Hill had been due to appear at Oxford magistrates’ court on January 31, but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has now abandoned the case.

He tweeted: “The #CPS have dropped the charges against me! They’ve reversed the police decision to charge me over my objection to Charles Windsor in #Oxford.

“Many thanks to everyone who has supported me. I’m now taking legal advice about action against the police.”

The CPS said: “We have a duty to keep all cases under review and, after a further assessment, we concluded this case did not meet our legal test for a prosecution.

“It has been discontinued and all parties informed of the outcome.”
