RAIL union members in Scotland will gather today to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Newton rail crash.
Aslef will remember the four people, including two train drivers, who lost their lives in the July 1991 accident, with a minute’s silence being observed.
Union members Reginald McEwan, 61, and David Scott, 27, and passengers Kenneth Meechan, 20, and Tracy Donnachie, 18, died as a result of the head-on collision of two trains near Glasgow, which also left 22 people injured.
Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said: “We will never forget the two drivers and two passengers who died in the crash at Newton.
“We must ensure that we never forget the lessons from this tragedy, to ensure that we keep the people who work on, and travel on, our railway safe.”
Scotland organiser Kevin Lindsay added: “It is vitally important that we work, every day, to improve the safety of our railway and do nothing to compromise the safety of passengers and staff.”
