WORKERS at a Brighton pub are being victimised because of their determination to push ahead with landmark strikes, their union has charged.
United Voices of the World (UVW) slammed bosses at Saint James Tavern for calling the bar staff into disciplinary proceedings today ahead of their first walkout – scheduled for June 25.
The workers, who bucked the trend in the largely non-unionised sector by unanimously backing industrial action last month, are demanding £11.50 an hour, an occupational sick pay scheme and an end to zero-hour contracts.
Zakaria Abedi and Victoria Bennett, who lease the city centre site from the Stonegate Group, have accused the employees of bringing the business into disrepute, the union said.
Bar supervisor Tris Houseman said: “We believe these claims are unfounded and a response to us proposing lawful industrial action.
“We’re all upset by the owners focusing their effort and finances into what we feel is an attack on ourselves.”
UVW general secretary Petros Elia called on the landlords to drop disciplinary proceedings and negotiate.
The pair claim that staff have been “poisoned” against them by an individual who was barred from the pub.
