HOWARD BECKETT has launched a campaign to become the next leader of the Unite union.
Mr Beckett, currently one of Unite’s assistant general secretaries, is hoping to replace Len McCluskey when he steps down later this year.
Fellow leftwingers Sharon Graham and Steve Turner have also announced that they are standing in the election, with the latter being the candidate of the union’s United Left.
Mr Beckett said: “This is a critical time for workers across our regions and nations and I know they expect strong leadership from Unite.
“We know that this rabid Tory government is hell-bent on making workers pay for this health crisis, just like they made workers pay for the bankers’ crisis. I am determined to stop that from happening.
“In the coming weeks, I will lay out my vision for Unite and its incredible membership as we emerge from [the Covid-19] pandemic.”
Rightwinger Gerard Coyne, who stood against Mr McCluskey in 2017, has also declared his intention to stand.
Candidates will need 174 branch nominations to proceed to July’s ballot, with the result expected in late August.
