Bill to protect shopworkers from abuse blocked by government
Sir Keir Starmer with Usdaw general secretary Paddy Lillis at the head office of Usdaw in Fallowfield, Manchester

THE Tory government was slammed today for blocking a new law to protect shopworkers from violence and abuse.

Shopworkers’ union Usdaw wants stronger punishments for people who attack retail workers, in the same way that emergency-service personnel are specifically covered by regulations.

The union’s call is supported by 23 major retailers and industry bodies including Aldi, Asda, Boots, the Co-op, Homebase, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Nationwide, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and WH Smith.
