Brighton students enter second week of occupation

STUDENTS in Brighton have entered their second week of an occupation at the city’s university.

The occupation is in support of members of the University and College Union (UCU) who are on indefinite strike at Brighton University and also as a protest at student homelessness.

Brighton University authorities stopped lecturers’ pay when they implemented a ban on marking, even though the lecturers were carrying out other teaching duties.

The occupation is being carried under the name University of Brighton Solidarity, which accused the university of spending thousands of pounds on security measures against them including the erection of fences and employment of security guards.

In the last year, more than 100 academic staff at Brighton lost their jobs.

The group said: “While the university spends thousands on round-the-clock security and excessive fencing, it continues to make cuts across the board, and students live in increasingly precarious conditions.”

The occupation started on Monday last week.
