Campaigners gear up for new round of Kill the Bill demos

A GROWING movement to thwart the Tory policing Bill is holding a fourth national day of action tomorrow.

Kill the Bill rallies are taking place in 30 towns and cities across the country against the government’s bid to hand police greater powers to crack down on peaceful protest.

Former Labour leader Jeremey Corbyn will address crowds in London, where thousands are expected to assemble in Russell Square from 12pm.

The day of action follows the anniversary of George Floyd’s death, which sparked the Black Lives Matter movement in Britain.

Organised by the Kill the Bill coalition, a movement started by United for Black Lives, a campaign group led by black women, the next wave of protests are also being held in solidarity with Palestine.

Israel’s latest violence against Palestinians saw hundreds of thousands of protesters take to the streets across Britain in recent weeks.

Ahead of Saturday’s mass protests Mr Corbyn said: “We’re only going to defeat this Bill and protect our right to protest and ensure our police are fully accountable if we all unite together in the calls, in the demonstrations, in the noise and in the pressure on individual members of Parliament. Big movements, big demonstrations make a difference.”

If passed, the policing Bill would give officers more powers to shut down peaceful protest and introduce new offences against demonstrators.

Civil liberties groups have also warned against measures in the Bill to extend stop and search powers and criminalise trespass, which threatens the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community’s way of life.

Protests are also taking place on Saturday in Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, Reading, Cardiff and Bristol.
