Claudia Webbe receives horrific abuse online for supporting Indian farmers

LABOUR MP Claudia Webbe has received horrific abuse on Twitter for standing in solidarity with Indian farmers, who are protesting against a new law that would see their incomes ravaged by big business.

Ms Webbe tweeted that the farmers were peacefully protesting against their government’s “attempts to railroad free-market capitalism into their farming communities.”

In response to reports of state-sanctioned violence against the farmers, she wrote: “Our government should immediately cease sale of weapons including water cannons, tear gas and baton charges, which could be used against farmers in India.

“The right to peacefully protest is a human right.”

Ms Webbe faced a stream of racism and misogyny in response to her tweets.

Some of the responses read: “Ugly N***** wydling,” “Black bitch,” “Keep you [sic] f*cking nose out of my country” and “I stand with chimps.”

London deputy mayor Rajesh Agrawal also tweeted criticism of Ms Webbe’s support, which he deleted after The Skwawkbox approached the mayor’s office for comment, according to the online publication.

“I have been subjected to horrific, racist, misogynist and violent online abuse for standing in solidarity with Indian Farmers," Ms Webbe told the Morning Star. “I understand that other supporters of the farmers’ cause, including Greta Thunberg, Rihanna, and Meena Harris, the niece of [US Vice-president] Kamala Harris have also received abhorrent abuse.

“Social media companies and government must work together to root out the epidemic of online abuse that plagues the online political sphere.

“Yet I shall not be silenced. Across the globe, we must stand in solidarity with Indian farmers who are peacefully protesting government attempts to railroad exploitative, extractive free market capitalism into their farming communities.

“I fear that we are seeing democracy being cast aside along with basic human rights, including the freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly. Protesters are being killed, injured, and unjustly imprisoned. Together, we must fight for a world free of online abuse and free of the exploitation that the Indian farmers are currently suffering from.

“I stand for human rights — #IStandWithFarmers.”

Singer Rihanna and young activist Ms Thunberg are among a handful of famous figures to have also expressed solidarity with the farmers, with mainstream media reporting how such statements have “angered” the Indian government.

But the abuse Ms Webbe has faced has gone largely unreported.

Ms Webbe has received messages of solidarity from British-Indian public figures including Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, who tweeted: “Glad you’re standing up for the human rights of farmers and for what is right.”

Stand Up To Racism co-convenor Weyman Bennett told the Star: “It is disgraceful that a black British MP giving solidarity to the small farmers against big business [… ] is receiving racist and sexist abuse.

“[The farmer’s protest] is something we should all support. Giving solidarity and speaking out for justice and fairness is a necessity in our society and Claudia should be congratulated.”
