Communists in east of England to fight for a Labour victory

REDS in the east of England will go all out for a  Labour victory next month, Communist Party members decided on Saturday.

Communists should work with Labour activists to press the case for change, delegates to the eastern district congress in Cambridge declared.

But they warned that “Brexit was the first — and often only — issue facing Labour on the doorstep.”

District secretary Phil Katz said: “Communists have to make the case for radical change and will not sidestep or diminish the issue of Brexit.

“Indeed, we’re clear that the arguments for change and the restoring of some sovereignty go hand in hand.”

He said campaigners should focus on the lack of jobs and opportunities for young people, privatisation of the NHS and funding cuts to schools, as well as the renationalisation of rail and an end to monopoly control of rural bus routes.

“We need to emphasise the need to establish ministries that can plan, integrate services and make long-term decisions on investment.

“A new ministry for labour is key to introducing legislation for workers’ rights and sectoral bargaining.”

Delegates also planned a push for the Communist Party’s centenary in 2020, backing internationalist events in London on July 31 and August 1 and mobilising for the Red Festival in Cambridge on April 3-5.

The latter event is set to include a culture and club night, a day of political discussion followed by boxing and martial arts.

A new branch of Acorn, the housing campaign group, will be launched at the festival and a campaign started seeking recognition of Cambridge citizens who volunteered to fight in Spain against fascism, with a festival of radical and socialist film on the Sunday.
