CONCERNS have been raised about the number of over-50s still on the furlough scheme, which comes to an end today.
More than 540,000 people in the age group were on furlough at the end of July, accounting for 35 per cent of the total, according to research by Rest Less published yesterday.
The organisation, which offers help and advice for older people, said that the pandemic has devastated the job market for older workers over the past two years.
“With more than half a million people aged 50 or older still on furlough at the last count, we may well see hundreds of thousands of hard-working, experienced older workers enter redundancy and, ultimately, find themselves looking for a new job in the run-up to Christmas,” founder Stuart Lewis said.
He called for “intensive retraining and accelerated assessment programmes” to help workers aged 50 and over back into employment.
The government said that 194,000 more people aged 50 to 64 are on payrolls compared with a year ago.
