A consortium of British manufacturers begin making ventilators for NHS today

A CONSORTIUM of British manufacturers began making ventilators for the NHS yesterday.

The Ventilator Challenge UK, made up of 14 skilled manufacturing firms including Airbus, Ford and Siemens, will produce 10,000 ventilators to help coronavirus patients.

Responding to the launch, TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady said: “Britain has an excellent manufacturing workforce. And today we can see how important that is.

“The whole nation will be grateful to these skilled workers for responding to this urgent challenge. Their work will save lives.

“It’s a lesson that we should never take a modern manufacturing sector for granted  — it is vital for our national security.

“We must always keep Britain’s manufacturing arm strong.”

The NHS has access to some 8,000 ventilators, which help patients with breathing difficulties, and is expected to need 30,000 over the coming weeks.
