Durham Miners’ Gala to amplify demands for fair pay for public-sector key workers

DEMANDS for fair pay for public-sector key workers will be heard on Saturday at Durham Miners’ Gala, Britain’s biggest annual celebration of the labour movement.

The gala, also known as the Big Meeting, returns after a two-year absence caused by coronavirus lockdowns and a record attendance is expected.

The Durham Miners Association (DMA) has chosen the theme “key workers” for this year’s event, with speakers from public-sector unions and two rank-and-file key workers addressing a crowd likely to exceed the estimated 200,000 of 2019.

Among the speakers will be Unison national and northern regional secretary Clare Williams.

She said: “Unison is extremely proud to support the miners’ gala and celebrate the UK’s key workers.

“Those employed in health, schools, councils and care have given their all in the last few years and continue to do so.

“They shouldn’t have to take what amounts to a pay cut in all but name if the government doesn't announce pay rises that kick inflation into touch.

“The gala is an opportunity for unions, the Labour Party and the public to come together and tell the government we want our key workers to be recognised and paid what they deserve.”

Unison general secretary Christina McAnea said: “It’s vital to recognise the people in public services and all other essential workers who kept the country on track at a difficult time.

"Even more so with millions finding it hard to make ends meet in the worst cost-of-living crisis in memory.”
