Extinction Rebellion to "swarm" London Fashion Week

CLIMATE change activists will “swarm” roads and disrupt London Fashion Week (LFW) on Sunday.

Protesters aim to prevent movement between LFW venues following the British Fashion Council’s failure to respond to campaign group Extinction Rebellion’s (XR) letter asking that it “use its influential position to tell the truth about climate change.”

The industry “has the potential to transform itself to be a cultural and creative force that stops the trend of excessive consumption,” the letter said.

XR co-founder and fashion designer Clare Farrell said thought leaders and creators of culture need to be held accountable.

She said: “While the fashion industry is not responsible for the unsustainable system it exists within, it is a key driver of global trends and a significant source of ecological devastation.

“Over 15 years, global clothing consumption has doubled while utilisation has decreased by 36 per cent. There are no signs that this is slowing and events such as LFW contribute to and encourage this continued unsustainable growth.”
