THE family of a young black man whose body was pulled out of a London canal after he was chased by police said today that they have “many unanswered questions” about his death, one year on.
Lamont Roper, 23, fell into the River Lea in Tottenham, north London, from an electric bike after a police officer chased him along a tow path on October 7 2020.
His body was recovered from the river the next day by a Metropolitan Police diver.
Speaking for the first time on the anniversary of his death, Roper’s family said today: “We still have so many unanswered questions about how Lamont lost his life.
“We do not believe that he would have entered the water voluntarily as he could not swim and was terrified of water.
“We miss him every day and will not give up the fight for the truth.”
Roper had been with a group of friends near Marksfield Park on October 7 2020, when they were approached by plain-clothed police officers and chased.
In circumstances that still remain unclear, Roper came off of his bicycle following a use of force by an officer, according to lawyers representing the family.
Charity Inquest, which investigates state-related deaths, said the family had still not been provided with police camera footage of the incident, 12 months on.
“It is of particular concern to the family that the police officer did not activate his camera during the pursuit,” the charity added.
The final hearing of the inquest into the death is due to take place next month.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said Roper’s death is subject to an Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation, with the force are unable to comment.
