Fast food couriers stage 100th strike action against pay cuts

FAST-FOOD couriers in Sheffield staged their 100th day of strike action today in a campaign against pay cuts.

Members of the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) union in the South Yorkshire city launched their action against courier firm subcontractor Stuart Delivery when their wages were cut by 24 per cent in early December.

Couriers, who have to cover their own vehicle and fuel expenses, have picketed outlets such as McDonald’s, KFC and Greggs.

Stuart Delivery is part of international logistics firm DPD, which in turn is part of the publicly owned French postal service.

Since the strike began, action has spread to Middlesbrough, Chesterfield, Morley, Birstall, Heckmondwike, Ashford, Worcester, Huddersfield, Sunderland, Blackpool, Mansfield, Wolverhampton, Folkestone, Thanet, Aldershot, Farnborough and Belfast.

IWGB president Alex Marshall said: “These couriers worked hard through the pandemic, but when the clapping stopped, the couriers saw their bosses take the first opportunity to slash their pay.

“And now, at a time when the cost of living is soaring, this strike is about survival.”
