Government extends licence to develop Cambo oil field by two years

THE government has been accused of keeping a new North Sea oil field “on life support” by extending a licence to develop it.

The two-year extension of Cambo oil field comes as the government considers North Sea fossil fuel reserves as it scrambles to get off Russian oil and gas.

But environmental campaigners say that while the Cambo oil field off the coast of Scotland may not be developed, the extension “delays the inevitable rejection of the field and the transition away from fossil fuels.”

Friends of the Earth Scotland’s climate and energy campaigner Caroline Rance said: “The UK government is trying to keep this doomed oil field on life support but they are simply dragging out the inevitable rejection of Cambo and the transition away from fossil fuels.

“There is no safe future for new oil and gas production in the North Sea, Cambo and all new field developments must be rejected.

“The government must reject all new oil and gas projects and instead rapidly scale up renewable energy while supporting a just transition for those workers and communities currently reliant on the oil and gas industry.”
