GREEN PARTY co-leader Sian Berry will pledge to introduce rent controls and protections against unfair evictions if elected mayor of London.
Ms Berry, who also sits on the London Assembly, officially launches her campaign to run for mayor today — the third time she’s run for the position.
She is running against current London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Tory candidate Sean Bailey, right-wing populist Lawrence Fox of the Reclaim Party and independent candidates Piers Corbyn, rapper Drillminister and Count Binface.
The Greens co-leader has centred her campaign on renters’ rights, pledging to work with Londoners for decent homes, security from unfair evictions and protection from soaring rents.
Her plans include rent controls and a campaign to finally abolish “no-fault” evictions, which allow landlords to kick out tenants at short notice without a good excuse.
In a statement, Ms Berry said that she will push the government until London “gets the powers it needs.”
“Almost every other major city has lower rents than London,” she continued. “Almost every other EU country has better protections for tenants.
“London needs a mayor who will be a real champion for renters — bringing down skyrocketing rents and bringing up the standards of housing.
“We’ve waited too long for the current mayor to act. It’s time for a Green mayor.”
The median rent of a two-bedroom home in London is now 50 per cent of the median salary, compared with just 26 per cent of the median salary across England as a whole.
Londoners also spend on average 40 per cent of their income on rent, while in Berlin, a city with rent controls, residents pay on average 24 per cent.
Londoners will head to the polls on May 6 to elect a mayor and 25 London Assembly members.
