Greenpeace calls on government to cancel £2bn orders for Russian gas

GREENPEACE has called on the government to cancel £2 billion of orders for Russian gas due to be sent to Britain this year despite sanctions and the war in Ukraine.

The environmental group also said a Russian oil tanker was due to arrive at Southampton docks today.

Greenpeace called for an “Emergency Energy Package” including accelerated development of green energy, home insulation and replacement of gas boilers to be brought forward.

The group’s head of energy Rosie Rogers said: “Our dependence on oil and gas is still fuelling [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s war.

“If ministers are serious about putting a stop to that, then we need to see firmer action on blocking fossil fuel imports from Russia.

“What we really need right now is an Emergency Energy Package from the UK government to end our dependence on gas.”

Greenpeace said that at least 148 supertankers carrying Russian oil and gas have left the country since the Russian army invaded Ukraine two weeks ago, according to its analysis of shipping data, and 69 of them were headed to Europe.
