HEALTHCARE bodies are demanding an end to abuse of doctors and nurses by Covid-19 deniers and anti-vaxxer conspiracy theorists.
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) published a letter today calling for the torrent of online trolling to stop, as leading medics encourage young people and pregnant women to get the jab.
The letter appeared after Twitter trolls compared RCM chief executive Gill Walton to serial killer Myra Hindley and the Nazis. The abusive tweets led to a counter-campaign under the hashtag #IStandWithGill.
Ms Walton said: “To those who abuse us for simply making polite requests to wear masks, to those who deny the existence of the pandemic or the science of vaccination, to those who issue death threats or incite violence against us, we say enough is enough.”
Christina McAnea, general secretary of health workers’ union Unison, stressed that conspiracy theorists “must be prevented from hounding dedicated NHS staff, so they can do their jobs in peace.”
The letter was co-signed by other organisations, including Unison, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the NHS Confederation, the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Nursing.
