Hospital security guards in Reading on week-long strike

SECURITY guards at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading are on strike for a week over pay and conditions.

The 21 guards, employed by privateer Kingdom Services Group Ltd, are members of general union Unite

They are seeking a pay rise to put them broadly in line with NHS rates – they propose £12 an hour for security guards and £13 for supervisors, up from their current hourly rates of £8.89 and £9.89.

The 21, who also want sick pay and payment for working unsocial hours, walked out on Monday and will return to work on Friday evening.

Unite regional officer Jesika Parmar said: “The last few days of strike action have been very successful with a great deal of support from the public and Reading local councillors.

“Unite’s door is open 24/7 for constructive talks with the management to resolve this ‘David and Goliath’ dispute between our lowly paid members and this large global company.”
