Hundreds protest Poland abortion ban outside embassy in London

HUNDREDS of people gathered outside Poland’s embassy in London on Monday night to protest against new abortion laws.

Protesters filled the streets outside Portland Place in central London despite organisers cancelling the demonstration after the Metropolitan Police refused permission for the rally to take place, citing Covid-19 regulations.

The action follows a larger demonstration of over 2,000 people outside the embassy on Saturday against a court’s decision to impose a near-total ban on abortion in Poland.

Protesters held a candle-lit vigil on Saturday and waved placards reading: “Keep your policies off my body,” and “I wish I could abort my government.”

The demonstrations have been organised by Polish activists from feminist groups, including Razem Londyn, Dziewuchy London, FARSA, and KOD UK.

They’ve been held in solidarity with protests erupting across Poland, which yesterday saw blockades in over 50 cities in response to a court’s decision to ban abortions for foetal defects.

The ruling means that abortions are only valid in cases of rape, incest or to protect the mother’s life.

Organisers are calling for people to take part in online actions by “spamming” the email inboxes of Polish politicians who have supported the ban on abortion.
